sharing is caring

have i told you how much cousin taylor LOVES baby Luke?! its sooo cute! everytime we come over she says things like, "I love him," "he's so cute"
anyhow, lately when we hang out with them we go in my sisters car and lukes car seat is right next to taylors carseat so that she is sitting right next to him... she is so caring and loving

when he cries she tries to console him and she says things like "it's ok, don't cry"

we have also been teaching her how to give him his paci if he cries, so in the car she'll ask for his paci or she'll take her arms out of her carseat and try super hard to reach for his paci and put it in his mouth. sometimes she's successful other times not so much.

the other day Luke was crying in the car and she couldn't reach his paci so her mama told her to hold his hand and she did and then she started singing to him- two songs-to soothe and console him and then luke was quiet and then so was taylor- she sang them both to sleep!

also, taylor doesnt like to share much and if she does- she usually wants it back. yesterday she got some cool new little toys and when luke was crying she shared her toys with him:

and this morning she asked her mama to call me because she remembered that luke had her toys. i asked her if luke could hav them and she said yes =)

we love cousin taylor!

beach bum

so last friday we were supposed to go to the beach with some of the girls but it didnt quite work out so instead we had lunch with reen and sarah at taco surf (one of our favorite places), but before that we had a little bit of time at the beach-only like an hour or so-- it sure takes a loooong time to pack up a baby for the beach!
cousin taylors toys
poor Luke had to stay in his car seat- he was sleeping anyway
ok-- i know weird pix of me but i had just finished feeding him so the nursing cover is wrapped around my neck but dont mind me- look at Luke! holding out his hand for the camera!

happy daddy's day!

On Father's Day Luke celebrated his 1 month bday! We also made it out to church for the first time! That was interesting... at least we were only 20 minutes late! ha! He did well in the nursery- he slept most of the time. Everyone was excited to meet him for the first time. Grandma was very proud and excited too and showed him off to her friends! After church we went home for a little nap and then celebfated Father's Day at Grandpa Dean & Mama Mia'a for a family bbq. The pictures above were on cards that luke made for Daddy and Grandpa.

bath time fun!

Saturday was Luke's official first bath. I had been giving him sponge baths up till then!
look the pelican is gonna eat him!
i think he liked the bath... but he did pee TWICE all over the place!

stinky poo

so yesterday we had an early Fathers Day dinner at my parents house with all the siblings. Luke was there of course... sleeping. We were all outside in the patio chit-chatting and having dinner. I decided to go in and check on Luke because he needed to be awoken for his next feeding- my mom and taylor came with me- mind you, ever since we got there they had been trying to get Luke up so that they could play with him, esp taylor! so i get Luke out of his car seat and of course he needs a diaper change. so i put him on the couch and taylor asks if she can see. she keeps asking and i kinda just look at her and then my mom and then say "ok but he's a boy and he has boy parts, he's not a girl... he has boy parts." now of course, taylor didnt understand, but i guess a part of me was hoping she did. whenever she comes over she always wants to watch as i change lukes diaper but she can never really see because luke is usually on a changing table. anyhow, taylor says, "does he have stinky poo?" and she's watching as the diaper comes off and i say "no, just pee pee," and she insists and says "he has stinky poo," and i say "no he doesnt" and she's like " he has poo poo." and then my mom and i get it-and we start busting up! because she has never seen boy parts she assumes that what she does see is poo-poo!

2 weeks and 5 days

luke is 2 wks and 5 days old today.... we went to his dr for a check up and he's doing great! he has gained about 2 lbs and has grown 2 inches! the doctor also suggested we start letting him sleep longer through the night... right now he can sleep about 4 hours till he wakes up on his own after his last feeding at about 1030 or so..... so, i think we're gonna try and push for the 5 hours for a week or two then build to 6hours like she suggested with his last feeding earlier- like at 10 and hopefully we'll get that last feeding even earlier than that... eventually... =) yay!

a couple other things....
my siblings blessed us with a new camera. our digital broke i think a few days after we brought luke home. =( so my brother brought us a new one... only problem is-- we still havent gotten a memory card for it.... too many things to do and to get!

iris and matt had their baby boy kekoa yesterday!

thats all for now!

He Only Writes Glorious Stories
5/15/08 (around 10:00AM) Katie called & told me her water broke. I left my desk a mess & booked it out my office, only telling two people on the way out.
On the freeway, heading toward San Dimas Community Hospital, I could feel tears trying to break free, but I wouldn't allow it. We had too great an event to navigate, wouldn't allow myself to celebrate yet. I was excited of course, mingled with nervousness about the unknown. "I might meet my son today". I am sure I was uttering some prayers, but now I don't remember them.
I called my mom & told her I was going to the hospital. I told her not to come yet since the labor might be long. She ignored me & showed up shortly after me.
I caught up with Katie in the maternity ward, probably within fifteen minutes of the phone call. Then it was kind of relaxed for a little while, hanging with a few family members. We figured out that Katie had been having contractions since the night before, but she didn't realize it. And then the Dr. came in to check her (upon nurse Becky's request. Becky happens to be a close friend of my mom's.) The Dr. checked her & said something like, "that's embilical cord, call Dr. Kassar, we need to do an emergency C-section".
The air changed. We were all talking with giddy smiles before that, but now the smiles were gone. Previous to that day, we & many people, were praying for a problem free, natural delivery. And then we realized there was a different plan, that our prayers could not change; and the outcome we still did not know. I tried to comfort Katie, but her heart was broken and afraid. I sensed inside that it was still part of the plan, but our request for an easy delivery was rejected by the Most High. We only had a few minutes while nurses rushed around, papers were signed, & then they wheeled her out of the room. I rarely said anything significant to Katie in those few minutes. Don't remember if I even said, "It's going to be okay". I think I told her I loved her a few times. Then they wheeled her out, and I had to wait.
The nurses brought me some scrubs, ridiculous looking things. Temporary scrubs, unlike Grey's Anatomy style (see pics). I sat in a rocking chair & made some small talk with the few that were with me. I think I talked to Taylor a bit. I tried to keep a calm heart & a steady faith. Still uttering prayers in my mind, believing that His will would be done. Though I had no idea what He would do, or if I could handle the outcome. I had heard a few times recently, "Lightening Crashes" by the band Live; a beautiful song about a new mother passing in child birth. I desperately hoped it was no sign to me, and never mentioned it to anyone. My grandma's mother died having her, and her father a few months later, from a broken heart (as it was told to me). So I know well, the significant possibilites surrounding child birth.
Then a nurse called for me to come to surgery with them. I walked in and Katie was drenched in tears now. Surrounded by doctors & nurses in blue scrubs & masks. They hardly seemed human while they pushed & poked at her. They didn't have time for bedside manner. I heard her crying at one point "I can feel that!" Found out later it was because the epidural didn't work. They let me come see her for a second. I walked up to her head as she lay on the table. Think I touched her head and said "It's okay baby, love you." But that didn't really wipe her tears away. The anesthesiologist told me they had to knock her out, cause they were in a hurry. A nurse then moved me back near the door, in an attempt to let me watch, but then the Dr. said "Sir, I need you to step out". I could see them putting a mask on her, and I could hear her whining something to them. Then I was out in the hallway again, waiting. Her mother walked up near me for moment. Then someone asked her to leave.
Then I was called back into surgery, and she was asleep on the table with a tube in her mouth. The Dr. explained, almost apologetically, why she had to be unconscious. I was given a seat by her head while they worked on her belly. There was a curtain up by her head so I couldn't really see the surgery much. I peaked once in awhile to see scrubs standing shoulder to shoulder, blood here and there. But I didn't look too much. I almost feinted from a shot once (not a gun shot, a needle in the butt), so I didn't want to feint now. Someone slipped me a camera from the outside, probably nurse Becky. I didn't really want the camera at first, but figured it was meant to be.
Then they pulled Luke out! He was carried across the room to another table. I think it was Becky that told me, "No pictures yet". And I think I realized, as they massaged his little body, chest, & back, that he wasn't breathing yet. About a minute later, I heard him cough & cry! What a relief! And I saw his first few breaths on earth. Then they let me take pictures! I walked over to him on the table and just stared at him in amazement. "Hi Luke, it's your daddy," i started to talk to him. The pediatrician said "Oh, he recognizes your voice," because he seemed to react to me. He was full of slime and blood, and I couldn't stop staring. At some point, I looked at his little body, hands and feet, wondering if he had normal development.
Found out later he was breach in the womb, so it was no question in my mind that the C-section was the right decision. Once in awhile I would look back at baby's mama, and she was still out while they worked on putting her body back together. The baby got wrapped up in swaddling cloths and we started to walk out when one of the surgeons said, "Sir, I removed four fibroids from her uterus!" Then he pointed at the table, and there was these bloody lumps of tissue. "Oh, thank you," I said, not really knowing what that meant. He seemed to be in good spirits about it. Even more, it seemed, that the C-section was a blessing.
I followed a few scrubs out in the hallway (prob Becky & pediatrician Jabazi). As we neared the waiting room of our family, someone said "Here, you want to carry him?" "No, you can.." I tried to say, but she stuffed baby Luke in my arms anyway. And I walked into a celebration of family, again trying to hold back tears, especially seeing my Father-in-Law's tears of joy. Everyone was smiling and taking pictures. And there I was, holding my son for the first time...

1 week...

there is definitely MUCH JOY in bringing home a baby.... but they also say that the first two weeks home are the toughest weeks for mommies, especially new mommies.....

the birth story... finally!

okay so i think i have some time to blog about Lukes birthday..... (although i do hear Luke whimpering in the background). so like i said in a previous blog about only getting 2 hours of sleep.... well, that was wednesday night. that night i thought i was having the "normal" feelings of pressure/cramping. i guess i was wrong. that pressure was actually me having CONTRACTIONS! i would have never known. i thought that contractions were supposed to be painful to the point of screaming like you see on tv (and like the vidoes from my child birth classs) not just heavy pressure! the reason i know this is because when i was admitted into the hospital on thursday the nurse was watching the machine that monitors contractions and i guess it jumped and she asked if i felt that contraction and i said something like-oh that was a contraction? thats what they feel like? thats what i was feeling last night!!!
anyhow, back to his birth.......so since i wasnt feeling good wednesday, i actually had also been feeling like a cold was coming on- i had a scratchy sore throat too, and since i only got about 2 hours of sleep... in the morning i called in to work and said i wasn't coming in. i knew i needed rest of some sorts and to just not be at work.... so as i rested and stuff i was waiting for my sis and taylor to come by so that i could hang out with them. I was sitting watching tv when all of a sudden....... it felt like a gigantic water balloon popped underneath me!!! and water totally gushed out! and it wouldnt stop. i started to panic and get excited at the same time... i was dripping everywhere! i even tried to get on my hands and knees n tried to put my butt up in the air cuz in childbirth they said if the water gushes to do that incase the umbilical cord gets in the way.. anyhow that didnt work... i started calling tony and then my sis and then the hospital and the hospital told me to first call my doctor and the nurse at the docs office said to go to the hospital. i asked if i should wait for someone to take me (like my sister who was on her way already) and to my surprise she asked how far i lived from it and then said it was okay and that i should go now and drive myself! i told tony to meet me there. and i called my sis and she kept insisting that she drive and that she was just around the corner. i got all franctic- scurried all about our apartment closing windows and grabbing all the bags and that silly birth ball too!- i did all that while still leaking water everywhere! i made it to the car, sat on a towel and made it out the apt gate and there was my sis saying she could drive but little ol me was worried about brining all my crap with me so i made her follow me to the hospital!
so i got to the hospital and was admitted. rossy and taylor were with me and shortly after tony came. all the while my sis was making phone calls to everyone! ok not everyone, but at least our family and i think she was texting people.
i got all comfy(still leaking though) in the pink gown and sat on the bed while the nurses checked my vitals. fortunately one of the nurses was mama mia's friend so it was comforting. anyhow she checked me down there to see where i was at- dilated, etc and she said maybe she felt the baby's head. so she left and brought in one of the doctors and then the doctor checked me too and he said, "ya, that's the cord." and then the nurse said thats what she thought cuz she thought she had felt the pulse of the heartbeat. so that's when everything changed! i was already mentally prepared for a natural birth and the looooong waiting, but boy was i wrong! that's when they said, "we are going to have to do an EMERGENCY C-SECTION!" at first i was calm.... then they all started rushing around! all the nurses, doctors, everyone, while tony, rossy, taylor and my mom were there!
they stuck an IV in me and started to roll me away and then i started to get scared! and what about tony!? he couldnt come with yet. they told him that they'd send him in. i got rushed into the operating room where the anesthesiologist and his assistant were and everyone else. that was crazy!- he was telling me about the spinal and the process and stuff and was trying to make me get into this weird position so that he could get the needle in. i thought he was crazy! he wanted me to get into this fetal like position and curl up so that my back was rounded- mind you-- hi- a baby in my belly makes that position quite difficult! and at the same time his assistant is trying to "hold" me in that position! and at the same time the doctors were pretty much telling him to hurry up because they needed to get the baby out so i think that made him panic even more! anyhow, all that to say and the spinal didnt work!!! they were all prepping for the emergency c-section and everyone was busily moving around and still NO tony!! he wasnt allowed in yet! ah! where was i going to get support! they kept checking to see if i could feel pain- like they poked me with some sort of instrument and i said OUCH! i could feel that and then they did a few other things and i kept saying " I CAN FEEL THAT!" then the anesthesiologist asked if i could feel just the pressure of what they were doing or the pain and i yell, "the pain!"- all this while they had a stupid oxygen mask on me that felt like wasnt working! and im looking at my doctor for some comfort and reassurance from him and he says "dont worry, we wont do anything if you can feel it." and that's when they told me that they were going to put me under! and so thats when i get even more scared-AHHH! still no tony and i start looking for mama mia's nurse friend and i saw her and that brought me a teeny bit of comfort. they stuck a different mask on my face- bigger and squishy- i guess thats the one that was supposed to knock me out- i was so scared it wasnt going to work and that they would start the surgery and that i would be awake or something. i probably prayed like a ba-gillion times in there and then i remember taking two big deep breaths.....
and then waking up in the recovery room!
i was so out of it! i had no idea where i was and then there were a bumch of new nurses and unfamiliar faces and i could barely talk and was sore and confused.... i remember talking to the nurse and asking if i was okay and asking where the baby was and if the baby was okay- she assured me that everything was ok... she grabbed the doctor and he said i was ok and mumbled something about baby being ok and surgery going well and also something about them finding 4 FIBROIDS that they took out (apparently thats a big deal, but being in the condition i was in i had no idea what he was talking about)... i remember the nurse checking my vitals, asking me to wiggle my toes and saying something about her writing her report...
then, eventually she said i could see my baby and that's when they rolled me out.......but i was still so out of it cuz of the medicine. i couldnt even tell you who was there. i know i saw tony and the baby but its all a fuzz. today i saw the pictures that my sis took on her phone and some pix that my in-laws took that day/that time....
still fuzzy..... but everything went well! and thus began our mason family! and our recovery time in the hospital! i must say- even though i wanted to be home-- being at the hospital those few days were very helpful and good for me, baby and tony! baby luke did get jaundice, but they treated him and they were acutally able to discharge us early- on saturday evening instead of sunday morning! yay!
thats my version! the end to a new beginning! =)
praise God!

yesterday and today-- menstrual type cramps/aches in the lower back and funny feeling in stomach..... and scratchy sore throat and more congestion...... and tons more pressure down there as if he's pushing or something..... and last night-- i slept about two hours! oy! just anxious and worried at the same time... i even called the hospital twice in the middle of the night becuase of all my symptoms!

coffee splat splat

so two days in a row splat splat went my fabulous homemade iced-coffee with lots of creamer! both mornings i carried it in its usual blue plastic cup with a neon bright bendy straw, of course, while carrying many other things in my hands, and as i tried to close/lock the door behing me- SPLAT SPLAT went my homemade iced coffee drink with lots of creamer. =(
tony and i came home about the same time yesterday and as we walked up to the door he noticed my two BIG splat-splat splatters all over the floor... with the neon bright bendy straw.
=( he laughed as i told him what it was.

since my last blog...

gees it's been so long since ive blogged anything... let me catch you up..... since the Gomberg wedding on the 21st......
1. we finished our child birth classes with Lorie David. I liked her and her class. She was very good and informative and organized and brief and to the point. I would totally recommend her classes: http://www.learntolabor.com/
2. we finished the last marriage class at church that Friday.
3. that last sunday in April was my last Sunday with the band- Project Worship- We played again at the 777 Church in San Bernardino. I thought it might be my last, but I wasnt sure only because i wasn't sure when I would begin my maternity leave from the band. since we got new members in the band that was probably one of the only times we were ALL there together to play so I was totally excited and blessed! I have officially started my "band maternity leave."
4. our girls bible study has been going real strong. I am soo blessed by that group! it has been such an answer to prayer for us all- for the fellowship and the friendships. We have been going strong with "A Woman After God's Own Heart," even though we have our little disagreements about the authors...
5. I had my first pelvic exam.... ummm, ya... quite awkward, but I am just under a centimeter dialated. I am down to a doctors visit EVERY week- afterall, I am in my 37th week already!
6. oh ya-- My mother-in-law threw me a baby shower on the 3rd! I need to post pictures!!!-lots of awesome gifts!
7. i've been cleaning and trying to get stuff prepped for baby Luke. bedding has been washed and some clothes, baby's bag is packed, but mine is not completely done. the crib and the changing table are NOT yet built..... oy- Luke's dada and grandpa need to build his furniture! (i'm hoping it gets done this weekend?!) hee hee! oh ya and the stroller has been put together- thanks grandpa! and the car seat has been installed- thanks dada! Despite all my worries and anxieties about getting things for the baby-- God has been so faithful... He continues to amaze both Tony and I with all the provisions- the gifts, the blessings.... why is it i still worry!?
8. since i work at a school, tons of kids are always rubbing my belly... especially lately. lots of little kindergarters rub my belly, give it hugs and put their ears on my belly to hear baby Luke-- it's so cute! I also get lots of comments from the little kids about my belly getting so BIG!
9. I have also noticed how much more affectionate tony is to Baby Luke in my belly... it's soo cute! it totally melts my heart every time he talks to the baby and rubs it and when he puts his hand on my belly to play with Baby Luke and feel him over around and kick...... awhhhh!
10. tonight was the hospital tour. can i just say that i really don't like hospitals?! the smell, the looks of it, the germs... everything! ahh! i dont like hospitals! ewwww! oh and yay- we are pre-registered!
11. oh ya- our lease is up in July and we would like to move.... so keep us in prayer- we would like a 2bd, that's more affordable than our "luxury" 1bd! =) oh and I don't have to go back to work until about the 2nd week or so in August! so yes- more time with baby Luke!
12. oh ya- and somewhere in that span of time-- my sister got preggers again and they are expecting another little munchkin in December! another little cousin for baby Luke!
wheeeew! that's about it!

spring love

it was such a busy weekend! Friday was Sam & Heather's wedding rehearsal and dinner and then their wedding was on Sunday at the Edwards Mansion. Tony was a groomen! We had so much fun! I didnt take too many pix:
The bride walking down the aisle with her parents
the couple saying their vows
(who put that silly plant in the way!)

the kiss
their first dance
me and tony with the newlyweds

dancing the nite away!
